NCIS: Hawai’i Fans Fight Back Against Shocking Cancellation!
NCIS: Hawai’i concluded its third season with a surprising announcement from CBS: the show would not be returning for a fourth season, leaving both the cast and dedicated fans reeling.
Vanessa Lachey, one of the stars, expressed her shock and disappointment on Instagram, describing herself as “gutted, confused, blindsided.” Just weeks before, she had celebrated the NCIS franchise reaching a milestone of 1000 combined episodes across its various series, including NCIS: Hawai’i, where she played the first female lead.
The cancellation struck a chord beyond just the main storyline. The representation of a lesbian relationship between agents Kate and Lucy was a significant departure for the NCIS franchise, which hadn’t always prioritized inclusive storytelling. Losing this representation amidst a landscape where LGBTQ+ inclusive shows are dwindling has sparked frustration among fans.
A petition, now with over 28,000 signatures, highlights how the show’s portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters helped viewers with their own journeys of self-discovery. Fans have taken their campaign to social media and even funded a digital billboard in Times Square with the hashtag #SaveNCISHawaii.
While network decisions are typically final, there have been instances of reversals. CBS itself revived S.W.A.T. after canceling it twice. Nonetheless, if NCIS: Hawai’i has indeed reached its end, it would be the third spin-off to conclude prematurely, leaving fans to lament the loss of a series that pushed boundaries and touched lives.
