Did David McCallum Work Less on NCIS to Spend Valuable Time with Family Before His Death at 90?
David McCallum, known for his role as Ducky on NCIS, has passed away at the age of 90, marking the end of his over two-decade run on the show. He was one of the last remaining original cast members.
In recent years, his character’s appearances had become less frequent, leading to speculation about his departure. Before his passing, David McCallum explained that he chose to appear in fewer episodes to spend more time with his family, including his wife, children, six grandsons, and their cat, Nickie. He reached an agreement with CBS for a limited schedule on the show, ensuring family time.
The decision to step back from his role came when he felt that Ducky had become “redundant” after being a part of the show since its inception in 2003. In 2018, his character retired from the role of chief medical examiner, making way for his assistant, Jimmy Palmer.
David McCallum passed away in New York from natural causes. The current executive producers of NCIS, Seven D. Binder and David North, praised him for his 20 years on the show, describing him as a legend, a consummate professional, and a beloved member of the NCIS family.
His son, Peter McCallum, paid a heartwarming tribute to his father, calling him “the kindest, coolest, most patient, and loving father.”
