Former NCIS star Mark Harmon has paid tribute to George Schenck, a former showrunner who passed away on August 3 at the age of 82. Schenck, who played a pivotal role in the first 15 seasons of NCIS, died at his home in Los Angeles. CBS confirmed the news.
Harmon, who portrayed Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the series before leaving in its 19th season, honored Schenck with a heartfelt message. “So sorry to hear the news about George,” Harmon said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “The professionalism and tenacity of George and Frank Cardea changed the face of the show. I’m so appreciative of the team and teamwork they both represented.”
Schenck, alongside Cardea, was a key figure on NCIS for over 40 years, serving as a writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner until his retirement in 2018.
As NCIS gears up for its 22nd season, star Wilmer Valderrama, who plays Special Agent Nick Torres, shared an update from the set. “Alright, beautiful people. We’re officially back on the set of NCIS. Season 22 is a go,” Valderrama said. “I’m just catching you up that your boy Nick is back!”
He also teased what’s to come, noting, “The big conversation is how can we light some shit on fire this season? I think it’s not going to be your casual like, ‘Oh, your favorite team is in trouble.’ It’s going to be more personal, more soul-shattering.”
Valderrama hinted at possible new developments, including potential tragedy and romance for Torres. “There’ll be some [tragedy] this season. There will be perhaps some new flames. Perhaps Torres might be ready for love this season. Who knows? That might be a conversation or may not be a conversation.”
NCIS returns to CBS in the US this October. Seasons 1-20 are available for streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
