David McCallum’s Close Call: How Another Hollywood Star Almost Snatched ‘Ducky’ Role on NCIS!
David McCallum, renowned for his portrayal of Donald “Ducky” Mallard on NCIS, was an integral part of the show from its inception. However, it’s revealed that another Hollywood celebrity, Scott Glenn, was seriously considered for the role before McCallum secured it.
As NCIS celebrated its 20th anniversary, insights from behind the scenes were shared, shedding light on the casting decisions that shaped the show. While Harrison Ford was initially considered for the role of Agent Leroy Gibbs, it was eventually filled by Mark Harmon.
Scott Glenn, known for his roles in Urban Cowboy, Vertical Limit, Silverado, and more, was a strong contender for both the roles of Gibbs and Ducky. Despite the discussions, Glenn opted not to take on the part of Ducky.
NCIS creator Don Bellisario was steadfast in his choice of David McCallum for the role, even in the face of studio reservations. James Whitmore, the director, recounted Bellisario’s determination, stating that when the studio hesitated to cast McCallum, Bellisario asserted, “If you don’t, we’re not doing the show.”
Ultimately, the studio relented, recognizing McCallum’s exceptional talent. McCallum became an iconic part of NCIS, and his recent passing has prompted tributes from fans and colleagues, including Mark Harmon, who expressed admiration for McCallum’s impactful life and conveyed condolences to his family.
