I’m starting to feel anxious about the future of an NCIS spinoff series due to a trend that’s sweeping through the franchise. Since its launch in 2003 on CBS, the NCIS franchise has expanded to include eight shows, with the original series now boasting 21 seasons. Despite the enduring success of the flagship series, many of the spinoffs have been canceled in recent years. These cancellations reflect a shift in the type of content NCIS is delivering to its audience. Given this new direction, it seems likely that another series could face cancellation as NCIS moves forward.
NCIS has built an impressive legacy, recently celebrating the 1000th episode across its flagship series and various spinoffs. However, many of the shows that contributed to the franchise’s storied history won’t be part of its future. As we look ahead to the 2024-2025 TV season, only one of the series that played a role in achieving this milestone will continue, alongside two others. Meanwhile, the franchise is focusing on introducing new content, signaling a transformation in the future of the NCIS universe.
