Will Mark Harmon Make a Comeback to the Main NCIS Series?

“NCIS” has been without Jethro Gibbs for three seasons following Mark Harmon’s departure in Season 19. Harmon is set to return to the NCIS universe this autumn as the narrator of “NCIS: Origins,” a new CBS series focusing on a young Gibbs joining NCIS. His departure from “NCIS” was left open-ended, sparking speculation about his potential comeback.

During this year’s TCA summer press tour (via TV Line), Harmon reflected on his exit, clarifying that it wasn’t a decision to leave but rather “the right timing to push away a little bit.” He expressed satisfaction with how his character’s storyline was handled, saying, “I was thrilled with the storyline they came up with and how they handled the character.” Harmon emphasized that the show continued successfully without Gibbs, noting, “and the show continued on.”

Will Gibbs Ever Return to ‘NCIS’?

Since Gibbs left the team, “NCIS” has moved forward without him, occasionally referencing his whereabouts. The most recent update was a card sent to McGee from Alaska featuring a portrait of Gibbs, McGee, and Ducky from David McCallum’s final episode. Gibbs did not return for the 1000th episode celebration.

When asked about the possibility of Gibbs returning, Harmon acknowledged, “I’ve always let the writers do what they want to do.” As “NCIS” enters its 22nd season this fall, marking the fourth year without Gibbs, Harmon mentioned he hasn’t been approached to reprise his role directly, stating, “Directly, like a phone call…? Not that I’m aware of.”

Regarding a potential return for a series finale, Harmon commented, “I’m not sure. It’s about feeling fulfilled or complete in your role.”
