A woman from Derbyshire who triumphed over anorexia has chosen to share her journey, aiming to inspire and support others facing similar challenges.

Annie Windley, a 21-year-old resident of Woolley Moor, battled anorexia for over five years, facing hospitalizations, medical therapy, and intensive care. At her lowest, Annie weighed only 29kg, posing a serious risk of a heart attack. Despite the hardships, she utilized her love for running as a tool for recovery, achieving remarkable fitness milestones, such as completing the Chesterfield Half Marathon in October of the previous year.

Annie reflects on her recovery journey, describing it as a breathtaking and thrilling process. While acknowledging that anorexia will always be a part of her, she has learned to manage it and shift her focus away from food. She emphasizes the importance of positive changes, stating, “Changing for the better is never too late.”

Her initial diagnosis in 2012 marked the beginning of Annie’s journey. After facing challenges like being sectioned and extreme weight loss, her true recovery began in October 2017. Annie expresses that this time, the transformation was solely for herself, driven by an inner strength.

The battle was intense, marked by daily struggles and extraordinary courage. Over the last four months, Annie has gained three stones, reaching her heaviest weight since 2014.

Annie had a profound realization that one’s behavior, treatment of others, and kindness hold greater significance than one’s weight. She encourages others to focus on aspects that bring happiness and fulfillment in life, such as being a good daughter, a good friend, and engaging in meaningful activities.

Acknowledging the mental health benefits of exercise, Annie credits her love for running with aiding her recovery, providing direction, and setting achievable goals. Participation in events like Chesterfield’s annual half marathon became pivotal in her journey.

Annie emphasizes the shift in perspective from viewing exercise as a punishment to celebrating the body’s capabilities. She advises against obsessing over food and calorie counting, emphasizing the importance of a flexible and free existence.
