Mark Harmon is currently on a promotional tour for his new book, “Ghosts of Honolulu: A Japanese spy, a Japanese American spy hunter, and the untold story of Pearl Harbor,” co-written with real-life NCIS Special Agent Leon Carroll Jr.
The collaboration between Mark and Leon began during their time working on the long-running CBS crime procedural NCIS, where Mark played SSA Leroy Jethro Gibbs from 2003 to 2021. During an interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 72-year-old actor discussed his departure from the show two years ago after nearly two decades as the lead and eventual executive producer.
Mark shared that, for a long time, he felt tired, especially considering the show’s demanding schedule in its initial seasons, involving long hours of work and shooting. Despite the challenges, he expressed joy in the experience of working on the series, highlighting the constant need to stay alert, build relationships with the ever-changing cast and crew, and contribute to the show’s success.
Reflecting on his time with NCIS, Mark emphasized his pride in the show’s accomplishments, noting the changes in writers, runners, and casts over the years. He paid attention to the writing room, staying ahead of developments and contributing to the show’s success in various ways.
Mark’s collaboration with Leon began when the latter served as a technical advisor on NCIS. Together, they explored the real histories behind the forces and individuals that laid the groundwork for NCIS.
In a separate interview with People, Mark discussed his life post-NCIS, noting that while he wasn’t retired, he appreciated the newfound free time that allowed him to relax. He emphasized feeling lucky to spend more time with his wife, actress Pam Dawber, and their adult sons, Sean and Ty Christian, who maintain a low public profile.
Mark expressed gratitude for the flexibility his current lifestyle offers, allowing him to plan dinners and trips with his family. Despite the demanding nature of his past work, he wakes up every day feeling fortunate for the opportunities he has.
