Breaking: CBS Drops Bombshell with ‘NCIS: Origins’ – Get Ready for the Young Gibbs Chronicles!
Surprisingly absent from our NCIS bingo board, the franchise is expanding its horizons once again. After successfully diversifying its appeal through spinoffs and international ventures like NCIS: Sydney, it’s now venturing into the past to explore the roots of its iconic character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
Yes, following the trend set by Young Sheldon, NCIS is introducing viewers to “NCIS: Origins.” This prequel series, set in 1991, delves into Gibbs’ early days as a special agent at the newly established NCIS Camp Pendleton headquarters.
During this period, Gibbs develops his trademark no-nonsense approach and forms a significant friendship with NCIS officer Mike Franks. While Franks, portrayed by Muse Watson, was a recurring character in the original NCIS, he met his demise in season 8 after being fatally stabbed.
The narrative of NCIS: Origins will trace Gibbs through the early 1990s, shedding light on his character development.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time fans have glimpsed a younger Gibbs. Between 2008 and 2020, seven episodes featured flashbacks to his earlier years, with Sean Harmon stepping into the role each time. Sean Harmon, the son of Mark Harmon, the definitive Gibbs actor, will join both his father and original NCIS writers and producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North as executive producers for NCIS: Origins.
Expressing his family’s connection to the character, Sean Harmon stated, “I’ve always felt there was a narrative worth telling about his early years, so I’m happy to be joining Gina, David, and my father in presenting this story and revealing a new aspect of this cherished figure.”
Mark Harmon will not appear onscreen as Gibbs, but he will take on the role of executive producer and provide narration at the beginning and end of each episode. Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, co-showrunners and co-writers for the pilot, bring their original NCIS expertise to this exciting prequel.
While the casting for young Gibbs remains undecided, CBS has until the 2024-25 season debut to find the perfect actor for the role, promising an intriguing journey into the origins of one of NCIS’s most beloved characters.
