NCIS Shock: David McCallum’s Close Call – Another Hollywood Star Almost Took ‘Ducky’ Role!
NCIS owes much of its charm to the beloved character of medical examiner Ducky, a role impeccably portrayed by David McCallum. However, the show’s history could have taken a different turn, as another prominent actor was initially considered for the role.
The recent passing of David McCallum, who played Donald “Ducky” Mallard, saddened fans worldwide. McCallum had been an integral part of NCIS since its inception, serving as the team’s principal medical examiner until his retirement in March 2019. Even after retirement, he returned as a part-time historian, making occasional appearances that were cherished by CBS fans.
In a reflection on the 20th anniversary of NCIS, some behind-the-scenes insights were shared by the show’s creators with The Hollywood Reporter. Notably, it was revealed that Star Wars actor Harrison Ford was initially considered for the role of Agent Leroy Gibbs, which eventually went to Mark Harmon. Additionally, Urban Cowboy actor Scott Glenn was seriously contemplated for the role of Gibbs, and interestingly, he was also a contender for the part of Ducky.
Despite the consideration of Scott Glenn, NCIS creator Don Bellisario was firm in his decision to cast David McCallum as Ducky. According to director James Whitmore, when the studio hesitated, stating they were not casting the “old character actor” in the role, Bellisario stood firm, saying, “If you don’t, we’re not doing the show.” The studio eventually agreed, recognizing the immense value McCallum brought to the character.
Since David McCallum’s passing, tributes have poured in from fans and celebrities, including former co-star Mark Harmon. Harmon expressed awe at meeting McCallum for the first time and acknowledged the honor of working alongside him. The condolences were extended to Katherine, David’s wife, and his family.
The revelation about the alternate casting choices adds an interesting layer to the history of NCIS and underscores the significant impact that David McCallum had on shaping the character of Ducky and the success of the show.
