Mark Harmon Reveals How His NCIS Character’s Name Sealed the Deal: ‘I Like That Name!’
The significance of a name played a pivotal role in Mark Harmon’s enduring 19-year commitment to NCIS as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Harmon initially expressed surprise at his strong affinity for the script, admitting, “I didn’t expect to like the script as much as I did when I first read it.”
The producers’ suggestion of the name ‘Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ had a profound impact on Harmon’s decision to join the NCIS team. Upon reading the name, he found himself drawn to it, stating, “I read ‘Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ and thought, ‘Huh, I like that name.'” Despite initial thoughts of a name change, Harmon insisted on keeping it as is, telling the creator, “It’s gotta be Leroy Jethro Gibbs,” a decision that ultimately pleased him.
In addition to the name’s significance, Harmon recently revealed another key reason for choosing to work with NCIS during an interview with People. He emphasized the importance of being home for Saturday breakfast with his family, particularly the ritual of making pancakes. Despite the demands of his work and the sacrifice of sleep, Harmon underscored his commitment to actively participating in his family’s life while being a part of NCIS.
Harmon’s departure from NCIS was addressed in the fourth episode, as revealed in a special featurette on the season 19 DVD release. Reflecting on his decision, he stated, “What has always drawn me here is the character I play, to keep it fresh and challenging.” Harmon indicated that Gibbs doesn’t fully retire in Alaska, sharing, “The character is living in Alaska.” When asked about a potential return, he left it enigmatic, saying, “He’s probably sitting in a stream up in Alaska fishing. Is he going to get out of the stream? I don’t know.”
