Mark Harmon’s Surprising Reason for Signing NCIS Contract – You Won’t Believe Why He Liked That Name!
The significance of a name played a pivotal role in Mark Harmon’s enduring 19-year commitment to his character, Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, on NCIS. Harmon, initially surprised by his affinity for the script, credited the producers’ suggestion of the name ‘Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ as a key factor in his decision to join the NCIS team.
Expressing his fondness for the name, Harmon recalled thinking, “I didn’t expect to like the script as much as I did when I first read it.” Despite initial contemplation about changing the character’s name, he insisted on retaining it, telling the creator, “It’s gotta be Leroy Jethro Gibbs.” This decision brought him satisfaction and played a role in reaching an agreement with CBS.
In a recent interview with People, Harmon revealed another significant factor that influenced his commitment to NCIS. He emphasized the importance of being home for Saturday breakfast with his family, particularly the tradition of making pancakes. Despite the sacrifices in terms of sleep for work, Harmon stressed the value of actively participating in his family’s lives while working on the show.
In a special featurette on the season 19 DVD release, Harmon discussed his departure from NCIS in the fourth episode. He explained, “What has always drawn me here is the character I play, to keep it fresh and challenging.” Harmon believed that the character’s journey was both honest and acceptable.
Regarding Gibbs’ future, Harmon hinted at a departure but suggested that Gibbs doesn’t fully retire in Alaska. He cryptically mentioned, “The character is living in Alaska,” leaving the door open for a potential return by saying, “He’s probably sitting in a stream up in Alaska fishing. Is he going to get out of the stream? I don’t know.”
