Mark Harmon Drops Bombshell: NCIS Return Possible, but There’s a Catch!
Mark Harmon discusses the possibility of reprising his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in future NCIS seasons, expressing openness to a return.
With one condition, Mark Harmon is willing to revisit his iconic character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, in NCIS. Harmon departed from the show in 2021 after completing 19 seasons. Although he hasn’t made a return yet, the door remains open for a possible comeback because Gibbs simply walked away from his position.
NCIS stands out as one of the few spin-off series that has outlasted its predecessor, the original show JAG (1995).
In a recent interview with ET Online, the actor expresses interest in reprising his legendary role. However, he adds that if there are plans to bring Gibbs back, he is currently unaware of it. Harmon’s statement reads:
“He’s probably fishing in a stream up in Alaska. Is he going to make it out of the river? I’m not sure. But if he is, I’m not aware of it.”
Why Should Gibbs Return in Season 21?
As NCIS Season 20 approached its conclusion, Brian Dietzen hinted at possible cameos from fan-favorite characters like Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo.
Despite high hopes for their return, the season ultimately focused on the current crew, with none of the mentioned characters making a comeback.
Following David McCallum’s passing this year, Gibbs, in particular, should make a return in NCIS Season 21. McCallum has been an original cast member since 2003, playing Dr. Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard, the chief medical examiner.
In light of recent events, Ducky’s extensive connection with Gibbs lends emotional weight to his probable return.
CBS proceeded with NCIS Season 20 without Gibbs, but his return is crucial for honoring Ducky in Season 21.
A tribute episode for the beloved examiner should include Gibbs, even if briefly, allowing him to pay respects to his old friend and take a break from fishing in Ducky’s memory.
