On Monday, David McCallum’s son, Peter, announced the passing of the actor, best known for his role as Chief Medical Examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard on the long-running CBS drama, NCIS. David McCallum, who had just turned 90 a week prior, died of natural causes at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Mark Harmon, who played the lead role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS until 2021, expressed his awe at meeting McCallum and how honored the entire cast felt to work alongside him. Brian Dietzen, who portrayed Dr. Jimmy Palmer on the show, posted a touching tribute on social media. He described McCallum as a mentor, a great scene partner, a loving father and husband, and a dear friend. Dietzen recalled how their friendship developed over the 20 years they worked together and praised McCallum’s quick wit, sense of humor, and ability to steal every scene he was in.
Dietzen explained that their on-screen friendship between Ducky and Jimmy mirrored their off-screen relationship. He shared how they went on field trips for character research, attended charity events, played golf, and how McCallum was always up for an adventure. He emphasized the wide range of McCallum’s talents, from acting in hit TV shows to writing novels while raising a loving family.
Pauley Perrette, who portrayed Abby Sciuto from 2003 to 2018, also paid tribute to David McCallum on Instagram, acknowledging his legendary career and love for his family.
Michael Weatherly, known for playing Tony DiNozzo, celebrated McCallum’s authenticity and the moments he shared with him on and off set. He praised McCallum for bringing the character of Ducky to life and sent love to his family.
